Maggie Cheung Ho-Yee shared her personal photos taking with Idy Chan Yuk-Lin at her official blog.

Maggie shared her experience working on Strictly Come Dancing! She said that she’s always liked Idy Chan. For the first time she’s finally got to meet Idy in person & praises the natural beauty in Idy. Even though they just get acquainted, Maggie & Idy feel like long time friends. They both agreed to meet up at the hotel’s restaurant after the show for late night snacks, then came along Sonija Kwok Sin-Nei & Stephen Huynh (Wong Cheung Hing) joined in for a souvenir group photo.

[Quite rare & nice photos! Imagine way back in the old days, these photos could only be obtained through insider’s sources. Thanks to the modern technology of the internet & more friendly, closer connections between artists & fans, many celebrities share a lot of personal activities & thoughts on their official blogs. I made a mistake between Francois Huynh (Wong Cheung Fat) – Mr. HK 2006 with his older brother Stephen (one of the finalists in the first Mr. HK 2005). I think Stephen is such a cutie, much cuter & more masculine then his younger brother Mr. HK Francois. Stephen resembles Miu Kiu-Wai in some ways! Maybe the eyes! Blah!]

[Ta Kung Pao – by reporter Yueng Bun from Changsha (captital of Hunan)] Feeling good for the first time returning to hometown Hunan/Regards Andy Lau as idol.

Because of holding a post on this week’s “Strictly Come Dancing” as a judge, recently resurfacing “SLL” Idy Chan arrived in Changsha as promised. Being half of Hunan origin, Idy Chan expressed that it’s great to go back to hometown first time. Fading out from the showbiz for 16 years, Idy has become appreciating Andy Lau more, but when asked on the past affair with Chow Yun-Fat, she only politely answered with one word “Thanks” and prefers not to discuss more.

Due to her portrayal of SLL, Idy Chan does have a great affect on generation of TV viewers. But there’s no resemblance, she has the Hunan fire blood in herself.

Smiling Idy Chan said that her mother is Hunan native, therefore, there’s always a special sentiment towards Hunan, and this time when she got the invitation she agreed immediately. “This is my first time returning to Hunan, it’s very good feeling!” Idy expressed that before passing away, her mother often suggested that must come to Hunan for a visit, this time Idy arrives at Changsha to fulfill her mother’s wish.

Avoid to discuss the love affair with Fat Gor [Chow Yun-Fat]

SLL image has deep roots in people’s hearts, Idy & Andy Lau’s ROCH1983 version is the classic of the classics. Although separated for more then 20 years, when mentioning Andy Lau, Idy is full of approval. She frankly speaks out that although Andy is little younger than her and entering the showbiz a bit later than her. “But everyone can see that Mr. Lau’s reputed career, his today success results from diligent steps.” She said Andy Lau’s not only her partner once, but he’s always her idol.

Overwhelmingly praising Andy, but when reporters asked on her past affair with Chow Yun-Fat, she appeared to try to avoid it. It’s possible that at her middle-age, she doesn’t want to talk about old stories. When asked about the former relationship, she’s becoming awkward but quickly answered “Thanks” politely and wanted to change the topic.

Returning to showbiz due to destiny

Idy Chan’s career seemed almost rest to seclusion, now appearing as a “divorcee” in “Thieves With Principles (lit.) 盜亦有道” Once the young, innocent “SLL”, now turns into every opportunity of a housewife, the future of Idy Chan’s resurfacing is not so bright. Early many HK media make that the reason she returns to showbiz now because of financial reason.

Regarding this, Idy relates the script in ROCH to explain the reason she returns “Gor Yee, we haven’t seen each other for 16 years”. She said that this year happens to be the 16th year since she faded out the showbiz, just a coincident. “Perhaps this is destiny” She sighs!

[I saw the entire episode, of course, the show centered the contestants, so her screen time is like 1/10 of the episode, which is quite fair. Idy seemed to grade the performance fair and correct & modestly gave her opinions to the dancers. The host He Jiong was joking that he & Idy had same outfits in the photo – the only one I’ve found so far. Attempted to do screen captures from the stream video, can’t seem to do it.

Idy dressed conservative in white suit but very elegant, Maggie Cheung Ho-Yee also has recently returned active in showbiz after a long rest for illness, she looked beautiful. Michael Tse Tin-Wah’s quite gifted for dancing, Sonija Kwok looked tired but her dancing is not bad along with Carlo Ng Ka-Lok. The pair was eliminated from this round is Zhang Jiani, the girl who shared the photo taking with Idy in her blog (linked in previous post), and her partner, Benjamin Yuen Wai-Ho (newly-crowned Mr. HK 2007]. And a lot of crying, esp. the pair Stephen Huynh (Wong Cheung Hing) & Qin Lan. Have no clues what they were saying most of the time, it’s time to learn some Mandarin]

At noon today [Sep 20] @ Idy Chan at HiFly & SINA honored guest chatroom.

Host=H, Idy Chan Yuk-Lin=I, and Reporters=R, * correction by Kit

H: Hello fellow net friends, this is the HiFly and the SINA Net synchronization live chat room. Now having with me right now is the honored guest that everybody’s has been anticipating, Miss Idy Chan Yuk Lin. Idy, how are you?

I: Hello!

H: I know that you come today, my heart pumps fast as if it jumps out.

I: My Mandarin is not that good, my heart pumps fast as if it jumps out too.

H: In my childhood, whenever I have money I bought all the book I can. [Not sure what she meant, I’ll need to clarify this]

I: Really, thanks!

H: Today you’re coming to sit on the judging panel?

I: Yes, I need to dance too! *

H: How’s it coming to Hunan for this program?

I: I feel very amusing, have heard that Hunan is very beautiful. Also, my mother’s Hunan native, so I must come.

H: So you’re really of Hunan origin.

I: That’s right, I never had a chance to visit. My mother passed away already, but when she was alive she told me must visit Hunan. So I’m here as her wish.

H: How do you feel about Hunan now?

I: I haven’t get to see anything yet, just got off the plane.

H: Are you familiar with Hunan food?

I: In Hong Kong, my mother cooked Hunan dishes before, I’m certainly familiar with it.

H: Do you watch “Strictly Come Dancing” at home? Have you seen any dancing competition?

I: In HK, this program hasn’t been aired yet, but I’ve read magazine reports on it.

H: What’s your thought on “Strictly Come Dancing”?

I: Very amusing program. Beautiful. Because everyone is beautiful, and dancing makes it more attractive!

H: Have you watched other Hunan TV programs?

I: I haven’t, but have heard to the “Super Girl” program

H: Yes, there’s also “Joyful Male Voice“, how do you think about New Talents contest?

I: It’s great! We must keep moving & can’t stay forever in one place. It’s impossible to see those certain people. Some new faces must come out. *

H: The contest has selected many new talents like Jason Zhang Jie. Jeffrey G (Ji Jie) is also from New Talents Contest. Wait a little more and you will see their dance performance. There’s so many media friends here, they have questions to ask you. Now I give the time to you all [reporters].

R: I would like to ask what is your next function? or your plan?

I: You asked here [in Hunan] or in HK?

R: Arrangement in HK.

I: Actually no big plan, will make a TV serial with TVB, and after finish it then will see.

R: I would like to ask. It has been more than 10 years since you have acted. What made you return to acting?

I: Come to think of it, it is very fun. When you asked me that question, I thought of something. When I was filming ROCH, Yeung Gor [YG] and I were separated for 16 years. It’s such a coincidence now, it feels like YG & I have set a date, I’m out now to meet him.

H: What a beautiful date.

I: I was just calculating, it has really been more than 10 years since I’ve acted. I just thought of a sentence from the script in ROCH.

R: Then, when you acted with Andy Lau in ROCH, it became a classic which everyone remembers. Do you still keep in contact with the cast in that series?

I: Andy Lau. We don’t meet up much but we’ll see each other occasionally. He’s a nice guy. Once a host asked him to write me calligraphy & he wrote for me immediately. * [Wow, thanks so much Kit for your correction, what was I reading? I turned Andy Lau’s name into a totally different name! I’m sure you all know what she’s talking about here! So major cool that they do keep in touch]

R: Then, you were Andy’s idol, now as you look back, what are your thoughts & feelings?

I: Andy is my idol.

R: Over 10 years have passed, can you grade him? Then, he was just a young lad.

I: Actually, I’m only a little older than him, our age gap is not big. He entered into showbiz a little later than me. He is very diligent & puts in his heart in his work. Therefore, he deserves what he has earned today!

R: I would like to ask now that you’re coming out, people on the internet talked about the past affairs between you and Mr. Chow Yun-Fat, you do mind they at all?

I: Thanks, wait a little and I’ll tell you again.

R: Can you disclose how life has been for you after all so many years absence from the showbiz?

I: I did charity work, so many charity organizations in HK. Several years ago, I also studied pottery. After that I helped mentally disordered patients, I also taught them pottery at hospitals, so the years had passed like that.

R: Why did you do these things?

I: Actually, when I have more information I will tell you.

H: Ha ha! [Ha ha! I feel like laughing along with the host!]

R: How different between doing charity work and making a movie?

I: I felt very tired when filming. But I’ve learned a lot through volunteer work. For instance, someone had bad breath but I couldn’t back out. I know that I must teach him [pottery] & can’t just walk away. I’ve learned that if you want to get along with others, you must let them feel that your love first, then they’d return the same to you. *

R: So many years of doing charity, what is your source of income?

I: Savings with my acting income years before, my family & I have family business, we have business in Shanghai.

R: Is this your first time on the judge panel?

I: It seems so.

R: This time as a judge, is there any standards?

I: I don’t have any standards, we’ll see when on the show.

R: You haven’t thought about it?

I: It hasn’t happened yet, I cannot guess.

R: How you do you prepare to appear as a judge? Friendly gentle or strictly hard?

H: His question to you is are you easily kind or very strict?

I: I think we only know when at the scene.

R: Your SLL image was brilliant in ROCH. Over 10 years has passed, now you’re walking on the street, do people can still recognize you as SLL? Would you mind if they said “SLL is getting old”? *

I: Oh, what a question! First, there’s so many people told me that why don’t I look any different from TV. But of course, reports intentionally gave me hard time & trouble. There’s a magazine article that I thought it’s quite funny when they zoomed up to my nose & said there’s hair inside. Come on, everyone has [nostril] hair & why picked on me? So I won’t put this thing to heart & will just let it go. *

H: Yes, I’m sitting very close to Idy & can see very clearly. She does have very fair skin. *

R: What do you know about Hunan? *

I: Not much. I’m told that many beautiful girls here so I come to see. *

H: Fellow net friends, our interview time is up. We’re very happy that Miss Idy Chan Yuk-Lin comes here to sit in judge panel on “Strictly Come Dancing”. Hope that Idy will discover her potential as a judge after the show. *

[The interview script is in simplified Chinese, so don’t trust my translation completely. Again, having never have any formal Chinese lessons, I’ve tried my best to put out the translation. Perhaps, a more accurate translation by Kit will be available soon. I like how Idy cleverly answered questions about Mr. Chow, & the reason she returns to the showbiz now because she’s out to meet “YG” Andy again]

China HunanTV & HK TVB jointly made show “舞動奇跡 Strictly Come Dancing” [or the Chinese version of British BBC show with the same English title or similar to American ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars”] The focal point for the competition this Thursday & Friday [Sep 20-21] is the honoring guest judge Idy Chan Yuk Lin. Other well-knowns had been on the judging panel before are Michelle “Mei Suet” Yim, Simon Yam Tat-Wah, Nancy Sit Ka-Yin, etc. Maggie Cheung Ho-Yee [TVB] will be the show’s host along with He Jiong [HunanTV]

[This is very interesting to see Idy takes part in this show. Hopefully, there’ll be clips with Idy in them circulated on the net soon. For local China/HK fans, please tune in for these episodes. It seems that this show is more popular in the mainland than in HK.]

2007.09.11 Three screen beauties back in the news – Return of Little Dragon Girl: Idy Chan

[Extract from The Electronic New Paper] These classic Asian beauties, who hogged TV screens in the ’70s and ’80s, retired at the peak of their careers to get married. But they’ve all been in the spotlight recently, reports AVIS WONG

She was once known as Hong Kong’s Marilyn Monroe.

But the pictures we have seen of Cherie Chung recently were not those of a glowing beauty. They were those of a grieving widow.

Cherie, 47, lost her husband of 16 years to cancer on 24 Aug.

Though friends worry about her health, she has retained her elegant composure, at least in public.

The classic beauty was third runner-up in TVB’s Miss Hong Kong pageant in 1979 and made her film debut in Johnnie To‘s first film, The Enigmatic Case, the following year.

She went on to star in more than 50 movies, working with many top leading men, most notably Chow Yun Fat and Leslie Cheung in her last film, Once A Thief, in 1991.

She retired to marry advertising guru Mike Chu, who is best known for his creative work in the Titus watch commercials and for creating Titus’ famous Chinese tagline: ‘I don’t care for eternity, I only care for the moments we once shared.’

After marriage, she was active in charity work, especially in promoting environmental protection.

Aside from a few select endorsements, she turned down all acting offers as she wanted to lead a peaceful, normal life.

But in February this year, tabloid pictures of the couple revealed a thin and gaunt-looking Mike.

In May, Cherie was spotted taking her 53-year-old husband – who looked to have lost 20kg and donned thick clothing despite the hot summer weather – to a traditional Chinese clinic and to see a qigong master.

Despite rumours that he had colon cancer, Cherie kept giving the excuse that he was on a diet.

The two have no children but shared a loving relationship and were considered a model couple in showbiz.

A Taiwanese friend reportedly said: ‘Cherie once told her husband that she would still want to marry him in her next life.

Mike humorously replied to her, ‘Why won’t you let me take a break?’. They were indeed a great couple.’

Mike reportedly left HK$50 million ($9.8m) to Cherie.

RETURN OF LITTLE DRAGON GIRL – IDY CHAN

WITH those crow’s feet, freckles and slightly pudgy figure, Idy Chan is a far cry from her most famous screen persona, Little Dragon Girl.

After all, it has been a good 24 years since she was catapulted to fame playing the surreal beauty opposite Andy Lau‘s Yang Guo in the 1983 TVB adaptation of Louis Cha’s The Return Of The Condor Heroes.

Idy Chan and Andy Lau in a recent game show on Hong Kong TV

Now 47, Idy has been under the spotlight lately, granting interviews to the Hong Kong media and making public appearances.

Most recently, she promoted an Asia Television Hong Kong travel programme with Athena Chu.

She even walked the red carpet with actor Simon Yam at the 12th annual Golden Bauhinia Awards on 1 Sep and presented the Best Actress award.

Her recent appearances begged the question: Is she returning to showbiz?

It has been 14 years since she retired from the scene.

Idy told the Hong Kong media: ‘I never thought about quitting acting before. Now, I don’t know whether I will act or not either. I’ll just let things run their natural course.’

She told Ming Pao Weekly that she’s interested in acting again, but kissing and intimate scenes are out.

Idy married casino executive Peter Chan Siu-Moo in 1984 at the height of her career and settled in New York.

Even though the couple divorced in 1992, she remained inactive in showbiz, only making the occasional appearance on TV shows in China and Hong Kong.

She was also an active charity volunteer.

Then in 1999, she was rumoured to have secretly married 1980s singer Louis Castro after she told the media that she has been seeing a mysterious ‘tall, gentle and caring’ man for five years.

But soon, the paparazzi found that she was living with famous advertising director Maisy Choi. According to the tabloids, the female relationship lasted 11 years, ending in 2005.

Once known for her icy and sullen image, Idy is now chatty and more adept at dealing with the media.

‘Many reporter friends tell me they had wanted to slap me in the past because I didn’t know how to answer their questions and had always put on a black face then.

‘But they just loved asking me about Chow Yun Fat, so what could I have said?’ she told Ming Pao Weekly.

She and Yun Fat had dated for five years – from 1978 to 1983 – during the early days of their TV careers.

Idy has not worked in recent years and it was reported that she struck the lottery twice, winning about HK$17 million ($3million) in Canada, and another HK$30 million in a Hong Kong lotto 11 years ago.

But she told reporters that ‘the rumours will stop with the wise’.

DEPRESSED OVER MARRIAGE? – LIN CHING-HSIA [Brigitte]

LIN CHING-HSIA may have retired and been married for 13 years, but the former queen of Taiwanese romance films is still a popular paparazzi target.

And the rumour mill has been churning overtime when it comes to her marriage.

The 53-year-old was recently spotted by the tabloids at the International Financial Centre in Hong Kong with her friends, former Taiwanese actress Hsieh Ling Ling and retired Hong Kong actress Amy Tao.

They had gone to watch Jay Chou’s latest movie, Secret, and Ching-hsia had reportedly seen the movie twice.

She looked radiant and happy. But it wasn’t always so.

The tabloids had said last year that Ching-hsia had moved out of her marital home in Hong Kong and was staying in an apartment in Kowloon Tong alone.

The reports also said that despite being married to billionaire businessman Michael Ying, she did not have a property or car to her name.

They have two daughters, aged 10 and 6, but the reports alleged that Michael was dating a divorcee from Shanghai and that the woman bore him a son.

When Ching-hsia’s father died in May last year, the media noted that the couple had little interaction despite attending the funeral together.

Then, she was purportedly hooked on ballroom dancing and was spotted hanging out at clubs, dancing and having supper with younger men in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

But in March this year, she reportedly moved back home.

Last month, a Taiwanese report said she visited the Hong Kong Mood Disorders Center at the Prince Of Wales Hospital in Shatin, Hong Kong, but friends have denied she is depressed.

Fala Chen is very much anticipated about her upcoming TVB series working with Idy Chan, Damian Lau, & Joe Ma starting next month. “I’m very anticipated to collaborate with Idy Chan, in the play she & I will have many scenes together, her portrayal of SLL really deep roots people’s heart”. Joe Ma, “the scandalous king” which the media call him. Fala Chen doesn’t believe that working with Joe will cause any negative rumors between them.

News sources: Mingpao: OLWeekly / Oriental Daily / The Sun / Sing Pao / SingTao

[I know almost nothing about Fala Chen, she’s in the news a lot, & she often appears very appealing. I too don’t know much about Joe Ma, but there’s so much negative tabloid news about him. He’s married with kid & seems to be a nice, family man, who happens to be better looking. I guess people tend to perceive that handsome guys are unfaithful & flirtatious? I know that there won’t be any speculations about Idy & other co-stars in this series, but then again, others always reference her as SLL & that, perhaps, annoys her. ]

[Translated by Jaynestars.com] It has been 14 years since Idy Chan Yuk Lin last filmed a television series. Apparently, due to TVB’s persuasion, Idy will be returning to the small screen once again!

Idy will be filming a series with Damian Lau Chung Yan, Joe Ma Tak Chung, and Fala Chen. Entitled, “Thieves With Principles (lit.) 盜亦有道”, the series will film in October.

Idy commented, “Both TVB and ATV have been actively recruiting me to film for them. The details are not finalized yet! I will be leaving Hong Kong shortly. It really depends on how the schedule works out!”

However, TVB executive, Virginia Lok Yi Ling said, “We’ve very happy that Idy agreed to film for us!” (Did TVB offer Idy a hefty fee?) “No, Idy was unconcerned about the money. The more important thing was the schedule.”

Joe Ma was excited in the opportunity to work with Idy. “I have always admired Idy and love watching her onscreen. She has always been my idol!”

Producer Chong Wai Kin revealed that Idy’s character will be a divorcee who falls in love with thief, Damian.

News sources: Oriental Daily / The Sun

[I’m SO looking forward to this. I’ll continue to follow any future Idy’s news obsessively! HAHA! I’m neutral towards Damian, but I guess he’s one of the few veterans at TVB & matchable with Idy. Eye candy Joe Ma is a GREAT bonus. I yet haven’t seen any Fala Chen’s works, but I hope her character will be likable. I’m TOTALLY biased]

Simon Yam Tat-Wah invited long-time friend Idy Chan Yuk-Lin to the 12th annual HK Golden Bauhinia Awards [GBA] ceremony last night [Sep 1], which was held at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Simon sincerely wishes that Idy would officially consider returning to acting & hopes to collaborate again with Idy in a modern version of ROCH [love story] movie. It’s known that Simon & Idy did work together years ago in a movie called 麻雀仔》 [I’m looking for the English title and this is totally new information to me] directed by Alfred Cheung 張堅庭. Simon also introduced Idy to the rising young director Edmond Pang Ho-cheung [directed Simon’s latest film “Exodus“].

Simon & Idy were also the presenters for Best Actress, which the result confused Idy that she passed to Simon to clarify. Gong Li won the best actress award for her role in “Curse of the Golden Flowers” though she had to share the award with Charlene Choi for “Simply Actor” while Lau Ching Wan won best actor [also which Simon is nominated] for his role in “My Name Is Fame”. The best picture award was shared between “Exiled”, “A Battle of Wits” and “After This Our Exile”. See the rest of other awards results here.

In a recent appearance on a Taiwanese TV program “KangXi Come”, Andy Lau once again reminisces the actresses whom he has worked with before, he indicated Idy Chan gives him the most unforgettable impression, Anita Mui was the most brotherly, Rosamund Kwan is the most beautiful, while Maggie Cheung is the most sexy. Another feature in today’s Oriental Daily recollects the classical roles of HK television. From Yeung Gor’s deep affection, Kwok Jing’s genuine honesty, Hui Man-Keung’s dashing gentleman… and by no means, these roles aren’t fading as the years go by with exception that each generation of actors develop the role’s originality. TV plays often root deep into the audience hearts. Yeung Gor Andy Lau and Siu Lung Lui [Little Dragon Girl] Idy Chan in ROCH are absolutely one of the most successful on-screen pair of lovers in [HK television] history. Yeung Gor’s young blood and rebellion along with Siu Lung Lui’s outer coolness yet warm hearted, Andy and Idy’s performance made them as the most original pair.
