陈玉莲：智慧人生
陈玉莲的小龙女形象曾经风靡整个大江南北，就连金庸本人也说，她是最接近原著的演员。但是，她在最锋芒的时候却去寻找新的乐园——义无反顾地去做义工，无偿地帮助他人。
做义工：供书教学，改变他们的思想
在演艺生涯风光灿烂的1993年，陈玉莲退出了演艺圈，开始了十多年做义工的人生。开始的时候，她在福利院教一些智障朋友做陶瓷，后来她来到内地的陕西、四川等地，帮助贫困的小朋友。她助人从来不以物质为主，最常做的是，寻找一些合眼缘的贫困小朋友，和他们一起生活，教他们读书，影响他们的思想。从万千宠爱集一身的明星到默默无闻的义工，这在常人看来是不可思议的事情，但陈玉莲却认为这样的生活才是自己想要的。演艺界的生活和义工的生活，在她看来，其实没有两样。这十多年的义工人生，她觉得充实、有意义。
香港的演员要更成熟，需知“不进则退”
2007年，陈玉莲重返演艺界，出演电视剧。或许因为多年以来的冷静感受，她很清醒地看到，现时大陆有很多演员在很多方面已经超越了香港的演员，只看连续几年的金像奖影后都是大陆演员便可知一二。“所以如果香港的演员不成熟一点，去改变自己的想法的话，（那就会）不进则退。其实就是在退步了。”一直云淡风轻的莲妹，一直远离演艺圈的莲妹，其实并没有真正离开过演艺，至少她是关注的。
不好的习惯、值得的东西都要懂得舍弃
十多年的义工生涯后重返演艺圈，莲妹领悟了很多，她觉得，人要懂得舍弃。“你以前旧有的不好的习惯，你要怎样舍弃；你以前觉得好的东西，以前你认为值得的东西，你要舍弃。”当年她祈求妈妈死得不痛苦而吃了8年素；现在，在无数片商的邀约下，她坚持拍戏要迁就她的义工工作，对有意义的电影、电视、节目可以不计酬劳去演出，她一直在舍弃。但她觉得自己的道行还不够：“我希望将来的陈玉莲，会是一个增长多点智能的陈玉莲。”
陈玉莲说，以前的小龙女是古墓派的，喜欢把自己藏起来，而现在的小龙女已经变成了逍遥派，摆脱了世俗的约束，做自己喜欢的善事。她用爱心融入生活，用爱心感动社会，她的爱心行动也带动了更多的人，关心社会，关爱大众。生活其实可以像莲妹一样，简简单单地过，日行一善就已好开心。
人物档案
陈玉莲，著名艺人。生于1960年，1977年加入香港无线艺员培训班，演出了多部深入人心的影视作品，如《神雕侠侣》、《天龙八部》、《射雕英雄传》、《玉梨魂》、《边城浪子》等。其中尤以《天龙八部》和《神雕侠侣》中的王语嫣及小龙女最受欢迎，成为观众心中清纯脱俗的古典美女化身。1993年，陈玉莲在最当红时退出影视圈，其后一直做各地做义工，做慈善活动，在陕西、四川等地走村串户，帮助贫困孩子……并献身于修行，跟随师傅闭关、修法，行迹遍布美国、加拿大、香港、大陆等地。直到2007年才受TVB所邀重新拍剧。她坚持拍戏时间要迁就她的义工工作，在拍摄工作之余，莲妹也会突然问对方：做人为了什么？是否日过日地过生活？”要是对方有兴趣讨论，她会分享自己的想法。

陳玉蓮探女童院增加體驗
【19:07】2009年10月18日【on.cc專訊】 陳玉蓮出席公開活動時談及早前為好友免費拍攝短片一事，她表示這是為以支持在囚人士及其家人而做的義工，「我近年工作都會揀好多有意義先做，同埋接觸到好多不同階層人人，好似今次我會去探訪女童院，我覺得可以同班女仔溝通一下，係個唔錯體驗。」
蓮妹選擇工作的唯一條件是要有意義。
As the “goodwill star” Idy Chan along with others attended RTHK’s 10-year anniversary “Thousands of Love”, the program with responsive activities and rehabilitative care for prisoners. She and Ivana Wong officiated the ceremony.
Idy said that she doesn’t get paid for the work because it’s more important to bring out the messages to the public. She shared “I’ve been shooting HK Stories, no fees, just given travel expenses, but I’m really happy with the work. The program is very truthful for half hour, and usually just needs 3 days to film. There’s no other stations can afford such limited resources.” Also, she doesn’t mind for being in only 1 or 2 lenses of each episode, and even treats the staff. “Though the work is very meaningful” she said. After the function, she will visit the Detention Center for adolescent girls, and hopes to gain experience by interviewing them.

Idy Chan in ROCH1983 as Little Dragon Girl, after 26 years, the image still carries deep in people’s hearts: cold, distant, yet also the image of Idy Chan herself. Can’t imagine this Ancient Tomb Sect’s legend has transformed to “peripatetic”, putting aside all the past feelings of over 20 years. Idy Chan said “I’m now a nun!”
The plan was Idy to return to Canada with her mentor to continue with self-cultivation study, however, the plan has changed. She’s been in Hong Kong and accepted to host RTHK series “Hong Kong Stories”. She interviewed people from all walks of life on their jobs and lifestyles, she’s been working hard like a true journalist, and it’s also her way to exercise her spiritual practices. [related]
Known for her reserved and quiet nature, this time Idy will talk about others in “HK Stories”. “Doing this project is so fun, it is to send out meaningful messages to the public, they are the stories of everyday heroism by real people, and it’s charity work for me. Some stories I couldn’t help but just laugh.”
“No Had Knowns, No Plans”
On talking about other people’s stories, Idy inadvertently deep talked about her beliefs, “I’m not superstitious, but I believe in God. All thing has its path and it’s you to decide. Especially if you decide to do something, then must put all your heart and soul into making it happen, there’s no second chance for anything. When one day you’re on sick bed and cry ‘If I had only known’, it’d be too late by then.”
“The plan of no plans” she shared her philosophy.
“Sometime ago I suddenly wanted to do a martial arts drama, and forwarded the ideas to TVB, they gave me an action costume drama. The script was ready as well as the time slot, then the company postponed the shooting. And my original plan to come with my master to Canada couldn’t be delayed, so the play never happen. Eventually I had to stay in HK because of other matters, so now I have a chance to do ‘HK Stories. So we can’t control things in life, no expectations, it’s a ‘impermanence’!” [related]
Improving Ideological and accept the reality
Idy worked with young staff and crew, and she’d ask the party “What’s the meaning of life?”. If the other party show interest in discussion, she’d be ready to share her thoughts. From “HK Stories” interviews, Idy led fellow reporters to the “twilight zone”.
“I used to work mentally disordered patients, so mentality is the target. I hope to lead others in the spiritual aspects of progress, change the idea of wisdom and growth. In particular, young people, their self-cultivation, cognition may be limited to any religions like Buddhism, Christianity, Catholicism … I want to tell them of self-cultivation is not a religion, is to improve the ideological and accept the reality. The purpose of self-cultivation is close truthfully, truthfully what exactly? Death is inevitable in life, but some people will not dare to face, we should learn to accept the reality. I also taught to be self-discipline and have consciousness, yet do not constraint yourself …”
Does not disclose who is her “master”
In recent years, “master” is often mentioned in all her interviews. Idy has followed her “master” in Canada, US, and mainland China. And for over 2 years, she was “closed door” from the outside world, and she’s now at “self-cultivation” stage. To most people, it’s just a mystery.
“We also use books as the master, I read scriptures, from Bible to Laozi, and following the path of wisdom. I’m open to believe that there are many different Gods. I’ve known ‘master’ for 10 years now, and it’s been 5 years into my practice. Master has disciples come from US, Canana, China, they’re all accomplished professionals, compared to them, I feel so little.” Still, no disclosing of who is the “master”
Adopting a young girl. [related]
“I had left the circle for a long time and the locals didn’t know who I am. I went online and downloaded some ROCH photos of Andy Lau and me as Little Dragon Girl. Master told me to show them to the students. We each picked a family to support, there’s this pretty and healthy little girl, we took her to Guangzhou and lived there like a family. It’s like temporary support of their lives. If any kids want to return back to their parents, we would just send them home. We instruct the children from academic study to spiritual teaching. Some people ask me why it has to be girl? To be honest I chose based on merit, she and I will spend a lot of time together in the future, so had to select a right person”
Love life is self-cultivation
Once in love with Chow Yun Fat, admired by Andy Lau, married to Peter Chan Siu-Moo but marriage failed [related], rumored to have homosexual relationship with advertising director Maisy Choi. So how is Idy Chan’s love life now?
“My love life is to self-cultivate. (So there’s no love life at all?) I’m now a nun. (Being nun means no more feelings? Putting aside all feelings in the past?) Being a nun means going forth, this question is actually very interesting. Let me me think about it before giving you the answer. I will need more time to really think about it, haha…”
Idy Chan has really enlightened with her practice.

陳玉蓮做義工走遍香港各區
【16:55】2009年08月12日 【on.cc專訊】 陳玉蓮最近忙於做義工，幫助四川的殘障災民，稍後又幫電台拍十集專輯，蓮妹走訪香港各區訪問一些生活特別人物，她覺得自己的生活很充實很有意義。

Lately, the semi-retired Idy Chan has been waking up everyday to volunteer with great enthusiasm. She went to Sichuan last year and stayed over 2 months to help to those less fortunate earthquake victims. Idy said “I’m the goodwill ambassador for this charity called ‘Stand Up’, the purpose is to raise money for those limping earthquake victims. We cooperate with students at Christian Zheng Sheng College (CZSC), together we participate in many charitable events.” Besides her high spirit in serving the community, she’s been working with RTHK to shoot a 10-episode series focusing on the stories of people throughout Hong Kong. She playfully shared “RTHK is known for their fairness, I don’t mind working for them. This program requires me to travel to every corner to collect stories to tell. So I have to keep myself updated with current events, including the controversial story on CZSC, only everything goes smoothly so I can finish this special program.”

陳玉蓮做義工可以唔拍劇
【19:20】2009年04月18日 【on.cc 專訊】 陳玉蓮早前往內地當義工，遠赴陝西和四川的山區扶貧，積極助養有需要的小孩，她表示有很多製作公司邀請拍劇及當主持節目，但一切要遷就當做義工的時間，由 於找到人生的目標，感覺刻下活得最開心。至於同場的康華透露，早前約滿無綫後，正式進軍內地拍劇，剛與劉雪華及吳孟達合作。
陳玉蓮表示好享受做義工的過程。
Idy Chan just got back from charity work in mainland China, went to mountainous of Sichuan and Shaanxi to provide help and support to the needy children. She said that many companies invited her for host programs or offer roles, but charity work is more priority because it’s now her main goal, and she feels very happy about that.

Idy Chan and several friends led the charity mission to Sichuan and spent over 2 months helping the children in many areas affected by the earthquake like Beichuan, Dujiang and Mianyang. Earlier Idy said “We went to many poor places that in need a lot of help, and it’s really fate that we were able to raise money to buy books for the children to study, if there’s a child gifted in acting, I really can help him to enter the showbiz”
Idy expressed concerns that many of the earthquake victims still haven’t yet received the aide with the amount of 250 CNY [~36 USD] per person as promised by the government.
Chow Yun-Fat recently has released a book of photographs for sales and the proceeds will be donated directly to help the victims of the Sichuan earthquake, “If he invites me [to the photo exhibition], I would go, I believe everyone has their own ways to help, doesn’t matter if giving money if one can afford, or sharing the work if can do.” (Appreciating his work?) “I’ve always appreciated him, he’s good person and nice to everyone. I remember back in the TV days, he’d treat colleagues to meals.”
And to elaborate on the earlier report: Muddy roads and rainy conditions didn’t stop Idy go to Lueyang to check in with the children and the plans to help them. Idy and friends have planned out to sponsor about 8 children from the age of 8-18 years old with their joint contributions. Idy even had to introduce herself to the children “Do you know who I am?” “Yes, you’re Little Dragon Girl auntie”, the children answered in unison.
