[ELLE (hk) February 2008] Idy Chan happy returned On screen, she was Little Dragon Girl (Siu Lung Lui) SLL – an angelic girl who lives in the ancient tomb. Off screen, she cares less of fame and put herself into religion.
In the first half of her life, Idy Chan has played 3 different roles – from a leading TV actress to a kind-hearted volunteer in some charity organizations and a total religious person.
Recently, Lin Mui walked out from her secluded cell and come back to the TV field she had been missing for 14 years. A trip returned to the showbiz; a step into the world again, it is a new path to her.
Idy Chan got popular from the SLL role she portrayed in 1983. 10 years later, she chose to leave the showbiz and live an ordinary life, working as full-time volunteer for more than a decade. 3 years ago, she even put herself into the religion she embraced and followed her master either to travel around the world or to live a secluded life. It was not until half year ago she agreed to film for TVB. Audiences have missed her a lot but also couldn’t hold their curiosity to know how she was doing in the seclusion and rumors of her relationship with her best friend as well as the winning of big sum lotteries.
Stop guessing. Now we have Idy here to lift up the veil and reveal pieces of her life in all these years.
1993 & after: worked as full-time volunteer
After leaving the showbiz, Lin Mui walked in a total different world of hers to the disabled. She always went to St. James’ Settlement to teach the disabled pottery. Hey this woman was not playing for fun. She had been there in service for more than 10 years.
“Why became a volunteer? Well I thought it had something to do with my mom. I was grown up in Tiu Keng Leng where at that time my mom ran a food-catering business. She cooked for about a hundred kids, from kindergartners to high school graduate, no matter they could pay or not. So in some way I would say it was my mom fed them to grown-up. Later my mom fell sick and I truly realized that some people do need a helping hand from others. Therefore I decided to help those needy with my own hands after I left the TV career.”
To date, Idy is still involved in volunteering work but using a different approach. In the past she taught pottery and now she helps sooth humans’ soul with religion. “I remember when I taught pottery, people had fun with just kneading dough and that’s all. But now I hope to open up their heart. I will tell them wise words and hope they could grow from it.”
Lung Gugu didn’t let any chance slip away. She even initiated and talked to those young extras while filming.
“I asked them why they became extras. They told me they needed money to spend on things like karaoke and games. The more I pried, the more they felt uncomfortable. They were afraid if I was a social worker. So they went home and asked their mom about me, only knew that I am Idy Chan who played the SLL role in Wah Jai (Andy Lau 劉德華) version The Return of Condor Heroes 神鵰俠侶 long time ago.”
2004: give up Buddhism for Tao “道”
Lin Mui adopted Buddhism in 1977 when she joined TVB actors training class at the age of 17. A few years ago she started learning Tao. What is Tao about? In a simple term, it is a mixture of Buddhism & Taoism.
“I am a pessimist. At one time I thought I would become a nun. Religion could help people change their perspective in many aspects and in further it would change the surrounding around you and your relationships with others. I was a Buddhist in the past 30 plus years and I thought it was the direction I’d wanted to go but I found it wasn’t. I want to move to a higher level. I want to practice my religion when alive and skip incarnation after death.” Lin Mui recognized a master who is expertise in this area in USA many years ago and later she gave up Buddhism. She even moved to reside with this master and other two soul mates, living a semi-secluded life without connection with family and friends. “It is good to live with my soul mates. Our relationships are much closer than family since we hold same belief which unlike our parents, whom we may have different views.”
However, will Idy Chan, once a sweetheart to many audiences even Chow Yun Fat 周潤發 and Andy Lau 劉德華, be content to live a nun-like life? “I don’t think it is that difficult. Just put in some determination.”
2007: making a screen comeback
Gugu fans were all excited with the good news – Idy Chan is back. In fact she chose a high profile appearance. First, she showed up in Be My Guest 志雲飯局 and received interview by Stephen Chan 陳志雲. Later she appeared in ATV programme “Hong Kong Best 10 Scenics 香港十大自然勝景” as a guest host. And she has just finished filming TVB new series “Catch Me Now 原來愛上賊 (previously named 盜亦有道)”, collaborated with Damian Lau 劉松仁.
When asked why she wanted to return, she said she just tried fooling around.
“I think filming is kind of fun and amused so I decided to come back. I have been living for my religion for a long period and it’s time for application. In the showbiz I could contact many people. I wonder if I’ve learned where to put in my efforts and to let go, at any time. If I could then I am no more a stubborn gal. So now I sort of live a carefree attitude. This is a religious exercise.”
Obviously, the used-to-be rigid Lin Mui has changed to an easy-going person. Just like Idy didn’t film over a decade and suddenly she has to throw herself into this stressful working pattern, filming from dawn till dusk and to tolerate those on-the-fly last-minute scripts change that is different from what she used to. But she didn’t show a bit annoyance.
“Someone has already prepped me so I don’t see any big problem. Actually it won’t be anything if you chose to neglect it. The less you think of hardworking, tiredness & strangeness, the less they will be happen,” she said flatly. And she didn’t miss the chance to make joke on TVB. She said the way TVB filming is most suitable for those who need to play ugly woman roles, just save lots of make up.
“I think it‘s not bad to act those ugly & haggard faces when you are out of shape and filming until 5 or 6 in the morning.”
Idy Chan has always played those beautiful women role on screen and in reality she’s never afraid of aging. Even when she returned the media has never stopped criticize her bad fashion taste & untidy appearance. But she doesn’t take it to heart. “They have freedom to express what they think. They’d already labeled me as a beautiful & stylish TV star so if I show up not up to their standard, they will complaint. I really think people should learn how to accept one true self and live on. For example, some people can’t accept aging and they turn to skincare products & health food, hoping these things could help them look young but it is just an illusion. No matter what you do you can’t change the nature.”
Lin Mui has no longer care about this aging thing. In fact she has stopped using skincare products for many years. She cleans her face only with clear water everyday and even when she was under extremely dry weather in Canada, she just applied cooking oil on her face and her skin still looks as good.
“It is just because for the come back I’ve bought some make- up items like foundations, lipsticks and eye shadows etc. They are my ‘working tool’. But now the filming is finished I don’t know when will I use them again.”
2008: completing the Tao path of live
“Will you film another series after ‘Catch Me Now’?
“I don’t know yet but we will see when the time comes.” She answered vaguely.
No assumption. No planning. It is her living attitude for now.
“Things will happen in the right time. You can’t make any guess so it is meaningless to make out plans meticulously. But don’t take it as you can do whatever things you desire. It is just not responsible.”
While she can’t promise for another series but one thing for sure is she will keep her religious practice. But how she will do it and where to go? She has to listen to her master. In fact, she has been traveled around the world with her master all these time. Last year she spent 5 months in Vancouver and now she is ready to leave HK at anytime.
“TVB is a bit worried if I will be in HK when they start dubbing for ‘Catch Me Now’. I lost my voice while filming there so I have to sync afterward but the timetable has not come out yet. I’m afraid it will collide with my traveling time.”
To support all these traveling expenses, I think one must be very wealthy so did Idy really win the lotteries?
“I will answer you in private,” she gave out a model answer but then added later, “Master will take care of me and we live simply.”
Frankly, I didn’t anticipate an answer from her mouth to prove if she had won the lotteries. But as an ex-Gugu fan, I am really happy for her to have found a way out from the ups and downs she’s experienced in life, even this path maybe beyond most people comprehension. (by Fanny Lam)
[Idy is such a beautiful person inside and out and I’m forever admiring her. It’s totally so cute how she’s prying on young extras while filming and they didn’t know who she was. It’s obviously she’s been opening up a lot compared back in the old days. I do believe that we’re born to suffer and Idy seems to become enlightened on the whole WHAT-IS- LOVE LIFE thing. Blah!]

[No new news since the new year’s, and it’s already March, looks like Catch Me Now 原來愛上賊 (new Chinese title lit. Falling for a Thief) is the first and last series for Idy Chan 陳玉蓮’s comeback since last April (wow, almost a year!). Reading the news Kathy Chow 周海媚 came back and got to pair with the looking-better-with-age Michael Miu 苗僑偉 in the new TVB series makes me sad. I guess Idy’s “Three No’s” and age are her disadvantages. Argh… I have nothing against Kathy and quite neutral towards her, but she doesn’t seem to age well, or maybe just this photo.]

[It’s interesting to see 3 Tigers, Andy Lau 劉德華, Kent Tong 湯鎮業, and Felix Wong 黃日華 shared their thoughts and views on Idy as a person, colleague, and actress. Andy was speaking in Mandarin, and he’s kinda awkward and wasn’t looking at the camera at some moments when speaking about how he fell for Idy back then. Poor guy. Felix seems to understand Idy, as a friend, the most. Somehow, Eric Li 李潤庭’s voice sounds similar to Stephen Chan 陳志雲’s of Be My Guest 志雲飯局. Cool interview! However I wonder why it takes CableTV Ent. News or CEN so long to air these interviews. It’s been 4 months since this interview was done, in mid-September 2007. Again, it’s first aired on Jan 24th 2008 and 2nd rerun on Jan 27th 2008 (CableTV channel 13 in Hong Hong).]
Updated 2008.01.31 – Here’s the brief of what 3 Tigers say about Idy:
Andy lau : She and I are fated [Then he talked about their first collaboration at HK radio]
She and SLL are the same, one lives in modern and other’s from ancient time. Living in modern time is difficult and that’s why she has more problems.
There’s time during the shooting of ROCH, she’s not happy. Then I only learned that she and Fat Gor (Chow Yun Fat) broke up. When I know that she and Fat Gor were a couple, I really wished they ended together.
I’d tell her that I like her, but she gave no feedback, nothing I could do.
[more of andy’s response @ A5 News]
Kent Tong Chan Yip: We worked together in many series DGSD, ROCH, etc…
She’s such a cool person, very quiet. She fits the role Wong Yu Yin, WYY and SLL are similar so SLL fits her well too
She’s very lip-tight about her personal love life, she doesn’t talk about it at all.
Derek Chiu Sung Kei [director of movie “Brothers” starring 4 tigers: andy, felix, kent, and michael miu kiu wai]: When speaking of Idy we have to relate to SLL, harm nobody, her personality is very appealing, very charismatic. She’s such a legend.
Felix Wong Yat Wah: She entered the circle just a little before me. therefore, she’s my “senior”, I’ve always respected her and listened to her.
She’s a very quiet person, she doesn’t like to talk much. During break time, she’d sit by herself thinking, reading books, but when you can engage in a conversation with her, she has such a beautiful personality.
Don’t judge just because she doesn’t talk much. Give her any roles, from quiet to strong, and active characters, she’d play all very well. She’s really engaged into her roles. She’s very versatile.
The most happy time I remember was filming The Grand Canal. We all went to Xi’an to film. Then we’d eat meals together and hang out. We’d continue to hang out when return to HK. The most difficult one when we filmed “The Wild Bunch”, she and I played a pair. There’s so many outtakes for one scene, she slapped me [not quite understanding this part], and that she didn’t talk to me for a long time.
Because I already married, so often no feelings between me and her. But wow, her SLL character is so attractive. She and I are really good colleagues.
I’ve heard that she now has religious belief, she’s really doing good deeds for others, of course, it’s been a while since we worked together, now I just hope to see her, have tea and chatting, and what’s going on in our lives.
At the end of the interview, Ma Ka Fai [a popular HK columnist/scholar] shared his view on why Idy as SLL is the most favorite of all. Because she’s not that pretty, she has all the features that are just right and fit so well to be SLL.

Idy Chan 陳玉蓮 revealed that Andy Lau 劉德華 did treat her like his girlfriend. Andy once said “The only distinct between her [Idy] and Little Dragon Girl 小龍女 is that they weren’t born in the same time, one lives in modern time, one lives in ancient time.” However, others [reporters] thought she was “arrogant” and wanted to beat her up because she didn’t how and what to respond to their questions with answers like “I don’t know” “Please don’t ask me”.
But Andy Lau saw a difference in her that he did fall for her, he said “During the shooting for ROCH, I felt that she’s really my girlfriend. I was worrying for her and missing her everyday when going home. Later, when she played Alan Tam 譚咏麟‘s girlfriend in “Casino Raiders 至尊無上” [watch related clip], I was really falling for her that I was very sad.” But Idy had no ideas that Andy adored her so much.
In the eyes of the audience often see Idy as an angel and that’s why they paid attention to her, but she’s just like any ordinary person and faced a difficult life too. During her early years, she had to rent a 60-sq-ft room, sometimes had to wear the costume wig to go home, didn’t have time to change clothes or rest, and quickly return back to film again.
Besides studying her religion, in the past year, Idy has great interest in betting horse racing. However, she doesn’t gamble based on the winning and loosing of the horses. She based her betting from researching, watching TV, reading newspapers, and studying the background of the horses.

catch me now

If anyone happens to have this article of Idy in TVB Weekly #545, please share, thanks! I could have bought this issue since it came out on the last day of my Hong Kong trip. From the previous news (my apology for delaying the translation), perhaps “Catch Me Now 盜亦有道” could be Idy’s first and last series for her comeback. But who knows! So let’s hope to see more of her (news) in 2008 and years after, and that TVB won’t warehouse “Catch..” Anyway, I hope everyone had a good holiday season!

[TheSun] Idy Chan 陳玉蓮 hadn’t acted for more than 10 years, recently she just finished up filming a TVB series “Catch Me Now 盜亦有道”. Originally, Idy thought it’s just a small “homework assignment”, but in the end she feels like returning to the old road and still has interest (in acting).
Back in the old days Idy’d film until the wee hours of the morning, however it didn’t occur to her that there’s no difference now “I didn’t realize that filming until 5-6am, and then starts again next day at 9am, so many days I didn’t get to go home and had to sleep in the car. Though I didn’t know that TVB has new regulation that cars can’t be parked over 24 hours, so I have to drive the car out and in. Then I tried to rest at artistes’ restroom but the air is no good, and causing me coughing non-stop all night.” Although it’s a long filming process, Idy still thinks that her situation is not that bad “Seeing the cast of “The Gem of Life 珠光寶氣” situation, must do all dress up and make up to film. (Will you ask for certain break time on next filming?) Actually it was clearly discussed but just didn’t work out, nothing could be done.”
Asking if Idy’d film again, she frankly said “Really don’t know! (No more interest?). No, it’s just I myself as a pious person has violated my own rules, must self reflecting, leading a pious life is tough, must not repeating bad habits, I see myself having so many problems.”
Embracing kids but not Damian Lau 劉松仁
Idy set out “Three No’s” from the start and refused holding hands with leading man Damian, but she tightly hugged her son in the series, Idy laughed “No problems at all with kids, it’s all about age discrimination. However Damian once said that all depends on the women’s wishes, can’t be forceful.”

- [WenWeiPo] Idy Chan 陳玉蓮 is one of Kenneth Ma’s 馬國明 favorite female stars, read translation @batgwa. [I wonder if Kenneth was or is really dating Margie Tsang 曾華倩, this guy seems to be attracted to older women, but he sure does have good taste. He doesn’t look that handsome, but he has a very manly look, which is rare to find in the younger generation. He’s same age with Jimmy Lin 林志穎, but he does look more mature than Jimmy, who looks like a college student. Just a blah thought!]
- Zoho, a local Hong Kong hip-hop R&B artist, shared a photo taken with Idy at his blog. [Ever since her comeback earlier this year, if anyone in the showbiz or the media had an encounter with Idy, they seem to have great interest in finally getting to meet her in person, which is good. She should consider to continue with her acting.]
- [from news clip below] Joe Ma 馬德鐘 expressed that he enjoyed working with Idy “She has a smile on her face all day long, and that makes you feel comfortable, so easy to get along with and she’s also very nice. I need to learn to be like that. Idy herself revealed she’s very happy with the filming this time and working well with others. [Because this news bit is in graphic format, I can’t copy words to translate, hopefully Kit will have a more correct translation soon.]

The other night, Idy Chan was one of the special guests attending “Hong Kong Confucianism Inauguration” dinner banquet in Shatin. She said “All day I had been doing charity work, all I want is to broaden my own wisdom.” Having finished filming TVB series [Catch Me Now 盜亦有道], she expressed “When filming started, I had problem with my voice, even now not completely recovered, so TVB arranged me to do voice dubbing for my part. Asked if she’d film again, she frankly said “Temporarily have no plans yet, however primarily I do charity work.”

Tungstar / SINA / TOM / 【on.cc
Due to being active in charity work, Idy’s often misunderstood that she’s religious.
Idy Chan attended a religious function in Shatin, though she doesn’t really show a great belief in any religions, just because she’s often doing charity work, and has to link up with different religious groups, therefore she has the basic understanding of almost every religion. Idy has finished filming a TVB series, however, there’s no talk for any project and she herself doesn’t have any plans for filming a new series. Because of loosing her voice during the filming of “Catch Me Now 盜亦有道” she still needs to do voice dubbing for her part.
2007.12.05 Damian Lau regards Idy Chan as saint

[AppleDaily – @ActioNews] No holding hands no kisses [Translated by Kit]Idy Chan 陳玉蓮 returned filming for TVB series “Catch Me Now 盜亦有道” after the 14-year absence on screen. Before filming she set rule of no sexy, no kiss and no love scenes for her. It has been almost 2 months past and the shooting is going to end. During the period and along the story develops, Damian Lau 劉松仁 and the director tried to make Idy break the rule but they didn’t get succeeded. In the end Damian can’t help but praised Idy as saint.
Idy Chan & Fala Chen 陳法拉 were shooting in Wu Kai Sha the other day. The plot was about these two good friends walking and chatting on the beach. It seemed they get along very well and they finished those 10 plus scenes in one shot. Behind the camera they studied the scripts together and filled the air with laughter.
Idy thinks 20 episodes are way too short and she didn’t feel tired from shooting all these times. But a pity that when she got herself fully into the work, it is going to end soon. However, she said she has not considered filming for another series or not.
Talking about the collaboration with Damian, Idy said she’d thought Damian as a serious guy but now she totally changed her views. She said, “I remember we had a dating scene to film and before the shooting Damian asked me if he could hold my hand. I smiled at him and then told him that it doesn’t necessary to hold hands during dating. Once the scene was done, he came to me and said, ‘It was already no holding hands on screen but can I hold your hand behind the scene just once?’ Then he laughed and walked off.”
And there was this wedding scene which the director and all the crew requested Idy to accept the kissing scene. But she said since she is playing a ‘silly woman’ so she can just pretend a bit shy and push Damian away, when he leans in for a kiss.” Finally the director agreed with her and said, “you won.” Damian also praised her a saint.
When asked her impression of Fala, Idy praises her as a smart and quick-learning girl. She memorizes the scripts very fast. On the other side, Fala said she did feel pressure when working with Idy in the first day but Idy taught me a lot how to speak the lines. “I’ve learnt a lot from her and Damian but it’s a pity that the filming is nearly finished.”
While mentioning Fala it made Idy think of Linda Chung 鍾嘉欣, she said, “I was dining in TVB canteen and suddenly Linda approached me. She told me she’s a fans of mine and asked if she could have lunch with me. She told me she couldn’t read Chinese so she sees them as pictures and it helps her memorize them fast.”
Idy has been returned to the showbiz over 2 months. People like crew workers or passers-by always requested taking photo with her which she never says no. She smiled, “Earlier in the costume function, the crew had discussed how to address me since they thought it is not respectful to call me Lin Mui. Actually I won’t mind that. Finally they came up with 3 titles – Lin Mui Jei Jei 蓮妹姐姐, Lin Jei Jei 蓮姐姐 and Gu Gu 姑姑. They just want to make it sound more warm.”
